Boston Beans was a small bulldog who belonged to President Coolidge and his family during their Presidency. Beans was the one dog that Prudence Prim would play with, but her games were a bit on the mean side. Beans would try to keep up with the other dogs on his short little legs, and when he was at a full run, Prudence Prim would grab his trailing leash in her mouth, stopping the little bulldog in his tracks.
Upon his arrival, he immediately attempted to take the spot of top dog in the White House, sorely vexing his famous sibling, Rob Roy. For example, Rob Roy was afraid of the elevator and when Rob would try to exit, Beans would challenge him and make him cower back.
As Rob Roy was a particular favorite of First Lady Grace Coolidge, there was no contest. Boston Beans was given to Mrs. Coolidge’s mother, who lived in Northampton, Massachusetts. Although one newspaper in 1929 did report that Beans was seen with Mrs. Coolidge in their hometown post-presidency, so perhaps she reacquired him.
