Calvin and Grace Coolidge remain one of the most notable couples to take up residence in the White House. Not just for Coolidge’s term in office and his political decisions, but because they had a veritable menagerie of pets on hand.
Ebenezer the donkey is one such pet. Unfortunately, most of Ebenezer’s details have been lost to history. According to Margaret Truman in White House Pets, Ebenezer was gifted to the Coolidges during “Silent Cal’s” second term, and that he was “accepted gracefully.” It is likely that Ebenezer lived out his years with the Coolidges in relative placidity.
Ebenezer must have been a well-behaved donkey, as he got very little press – unlike some of his more notorious siblings like Rebecca the Raccoon and Boston Beans the bulldog.
