President Grover Cleveland has the distinction of being the only President thus far to have served one term, left the White House, and then returned to serve another term. He was our 22nd and 24th President (Benjamin Harrison served as President during the intervening term.)
Cleveland and his young wife Frances (“Frankie”) had a home in Georgetown during their first term and often shifted back and forth between Oak Groves, as the house was called, and the White House. After their first term, Oak Groves was sold and the pair bought a home in Buzzard’s Bay, Massachusetts. When the couple traveled from one home to another, they often brought various pets along with them. One such pet was a Cocker Spaniel possibly named Gallagher.
Gallagher was white and brown and had long, floppy ears. Little else is known about this member of the Cleveland clan – he spent much of his time outside of the White House and so engendered little press.
