Grover and Frances Cleveland served in the White House as our 22nd and 24th First family. As animal lovers, they had several pets before, during, between, and after their terms – including a number of dogs. One of these certainly outweighed the others; literally. She was a prize-winning St. Bernard named Kay.
At the time, the White House was open to the general public and Grover often feared for his vivacious wife’s safety. However, the couple did have a home away from the White House called Oak View (it was also called Red Top, due to its red roof) during their first term and a house in Buzzard’s Bay, Massachusetts during their second where Frances could take her dogs – including Kay – and have some privacy.
Not much is known about Kay, such as how she joined the Cleveland family or when she may have passed over the rainbow bridge. However, given the Cleveland’s love of animals, it is quite likely Kay had a long and happy life as part of their family.
