President Hoover, like many Presidents before him was a dog lover, and owned many dogs in his lifetime. One of the Hoovers’ dogs was Big Ben, a friendly, white-haired fox terrier. Big Ben was named for the famous London clock.
Not much is known about Big Ben, but according to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum, Big Ben was a gift to the Hoovers’ from a person in Virginia. Big Ben was then given to the children of George Akerson, who was a secretary of Hoover’s.
