President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson took over the White House hastily after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. With them, they brought various pets including dogs, hamsters, and even lovebirds.
Lovebirds are a species of smallish parrots, and usually mate for life – not unlike LBJ and Lady Bird themselves. Not much is known about the birds who resided in the White House with the Johnsons. In this Presidential family the dogs got most of the press, leaving the hamsters and the lovebirds mostly unremarked upon.
As of now, the Johnsons are the last Presidential family to have had any species of parrot in the White House.
