Lucy Hayes, wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes, was a great animal lover and had several pets throughout her lifetime. While she was in the White House, she had the famous cat Siam as well as a mockingbird and 4 unnamed canaries.
These canaries lived with the family in the White House during the Hayes’ term, although it is unknown where Lucy acquired them. They went almost unremarked in a household full to the brim with children and other, much noisier pets, although it is rumored that Lucy Hayes enjoyed the canaries’ music very much.
