19th President Rutherford B. Hayes and his wife Lucy may have earned the White House in a rather untraditional manner, but they were very like other Presidential couples in one way: Their love of pets. Many animals lived with the Hayes during the Presidency, including a dog named Jet.
Jet’s breed is unknown; it is possible that he was a mixed-breed dog of smallish size. It is also unclear whether he lived with the Hayes in the White House itself, or if he joined the family during their post-Presidency years at their home, Speigel Grove.
Many sources cite that the Hayes dogs were well-loved and cared for by the Hayes family and one certainly hopes that this was the case for Jet also, regardless of when he joined the family.
