UPDATE! Dec. 6, 2016: A goldendoodle may very well join the White House next year. Details here.
This will be a pretty short article.
No, Donald Trump does not have any pets. (Rumors to the contrary have been debunked.)
He doesn’t have any dogs. He doesn’t have any cats. We’re not aware of any pets, including pet rocks. He doesn’t have any furry (or rocky) little ones to snuggle with.
We at the Presidential Pet Museum suspect this will quickly change when President-elect Trump gets to the White House. Why? Because every single presidency since Theodore Roosevelt’s (1901–09) has had a dog at the White House. So for that reason, we’re certain we’ll see a wagging tail soon after the inauguration.
The question is: What type of dog will Trump get?
- Will it be a “Make America Great Again” all-around, ever-popular Labrador retriever?
- A protective German shepherd?
- Or perhaps a regal greyhound or poodle?
What do you think? Leave us a comment below!
Deepa Mehta says
He will have to get a pet. It seems like a presidential thing to do. I think he would do well with a retriever or terrier.
Susan Bryant says
I think Donald Trump should get a Boston Terrier the only dog who was breed here in the United States
John says
Not true! Every variety of coon hound, Catahola, black mouth cur, Australian Shepherd (despite its name), American Bull dogs, pit bulls, American Eskimo, Alaskan kli ki, blue healer, just to name a few
Jessica brinkley says
Huzzah! But I should like to see him bond with any critter. The man could have a parrot, or a potbelly pig and it would be endearing. I don’t think it’s right to adopt one just because you’re expected to. A pet is a nonjudgemental companion, and a president would need that comfort.
Tony Nikoli says
I recommend you cease and desist with efforts to give Trump a dog. It is impossible to turn a person into an animal lover at 70.. Pets could suffer greatly if given to Trump and would likely be put to sleep once Trump is out of office. His sons shoot Elephants and cut their tails off for trophies.
Margielou Peters says
you are right one cannot just become an animal lover, bee good for Barron better than that stuffed gold lion
Janis Dunlow says
No way please!!! This man should not have a pet!
Rebecca Surette says
I’m not even certain he should have a philodendron. IF he gets a pet, it will almost certainly be like his wife…something to show off at appropriate times and to ignore otherwise.
Leeanna Burke says
Def agree
Annie McGarry says
I’m glad he rejected the labradoodle. Maybe he would prefer a Russian wolfhound?
Robert Nichols says
NO MEMBER OF TRUMPS FAMILY NOR DUMP HIMSELF SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO HAVE ANYTHING BUT A PET ROCK!
Pat popperman says
Since dogs are supposed to look like owners, I think Bulldog
Patricia Mudge says
Well, I think the First Family should get a dog who is truly an American breed — the Boston Terrier!!!
Rachel says
Yes! They are the best dogs.
Presidential Pet Museum says
Ah , the “American Gentleman.” Great dogs. And always ready for a fancy party — already wearing a tux. 🙂
Marghi McKeon says
A rescued mutt. I am thinking a pitbull. I have one I rescued and he is the greatest, most loyal dog. It would help debunk the pitbull myth and appeal to many Trump supporters, I suspect.
Presidential Pet Museum says
We would love to see a shelter or rescue pet. That would send such a great message. But it’s hard to imagine President-elect Trump going that route. He would probably want a pet with an impeccable pedigree.
sandra says
I’d like to see a cat in the white house again because they don’t take shit from nobody!
Michael Cherry says
How about one of each?Rescue dog and cat would truly represent those who voted for him.Any dog and/or cat will be great!
Tanya Elder says
Every pit bull that I’ve met has been the biggest baby. They were once considered nanny dogs and they are still very protective of their families. They would not regret getting a pair of them. From a shelter or rescue of course. A rescue is good because they are acclimated to home life before adopted.
Beverlea says
How about cats maybe a Maine coon
Presidential Pet Museum says
Maine Coons are awesome! It has been a while since we’ve had a cat in the White House.
sandra says
Yes we need a cat in the white house because they don’t take shit from nobody. And a rescue would represent the abandoned people of this nation
Tanya Elder says
how about a Lynx that would be totally cool. I want one.
Clyde Dawson says
No cat would put up with Trump.
from Expat
Teresa Barber says
I think Trump should get 2 Yellow Lab Puppies…one male and one female. Name the male, Lincoln and the female, Reagan.
Presidential Pet Museum says
Interesting! Two puppies would be pretty adorable.
Tonita says
NO wimpy dogs for Trump. He should consider a Cane Corso, Presa Canario or my breed – a Rottweiler. All wonderful dogs.
Tina Williams says
Lol, he is supposed to be a germophob , hm, I don’t know how he is to shake all the hands, much less have pet.
Tina Williams says
He needs cuddly Toy breeds like a prince Charles Spanie or Westie
Liza Argay says
A Westie isn’t a toy breed. They are terriers and probably not a good fit for him as they tend to have their own agenda and don’t take well to being bullied.
Denise Fox says
If he hasn’t had a pet by now, God help any pet in the white house with him as Trump has not one ounce of empathy nor the care gene to have a pet.
Pam Schaffer says
Agree completely, Denise!
Jennifer Vlazny says
I agree 100%!
sue says
If they get a pet, the maids will have to take care of him or her. Trump does not care, Melania can’t get any stains on herself (God forbid), and the child will be too busy.
Iva R. Giles says
Got that right on
Julia says
My thoughts exactly. None of ’em appear to have pets (though I did see a photo of the sons holding a very docile leopard…), which is just creepy. Says something about one’s character when ya have all that money/help and choose not to engage with any puppies or kitties.
valerie says
He should get a rescued Pit Bull. Whatever he gets, it should be a rescue animal.
Lily says
Yes a rescued animal
Raanan Geberer says
A cat. Turkish van
Czak says
I believe the First Family should be like any family. Some people just aren’t ‘Pet People’. If Trumps have never had a pet and don’t care to have and pet and aren’t agreeable with making a pet a part of the family, then they shouldn’t get any. It says nothing about their character if they are true to their beliefs. I am a dog lover and can’t imagine life without at least one dog sharing my space. But that’s me. And just about everyone I know. But that doesn’t mean being a responsible pet owner is right for everyone. Baron might like to have a dog and/or cat around, but it is for the family to decide.
sandra says
Well said
SinuheBE says
He will have a gremlin.
FD says
I would never trust that kid with a dog.
Lily says
I think maybe a pitbull dog for trump or a greyhound
Jean says
The Trump family should get a pair of Great Danes, these are awesome dogs. Plus a they are great characters and representation for our new President & family.
Brant Panter says
I agree two large males Danes would make a great statement.
Peg says
He should get a Pembroke Welsh Corgi so he can live like Queen Elizabeth.
Jeannine Mallory says
He’s too selfish to own a dog. A dog would get the most attention, and he wouldn’t like that.
Carol says
Every year after the West Minster Kennel Club Show, I believe the next day the winning pooch is taken to Trump Tower to meet Donald Trump. This has been tradition for years. I’m sure the President Elect has seen very many beautiful pooches and wouldn’t have a problem deciding what hound is best for him. President Elect and Family look like people that would like a big dog. No little lap dogs for them. Maybe a St. Bernard, Leonberger, Mastiff, or a Bernese Mountain Dog. All great with kids and are loyal to their family. On the other hand, maybe just a little mutt from a shelter. They make families happy too!
Dani Falcao says
A German Shepherd for sure.
joyceclemons says
A rescue. Chow Mix puppy. They are loyal to their boy when he grows along with them. They are aloof enough not to be underfoot to the adults. They are beautiful and strong. They read people and sense danger.
Nancy Toni says
I think a standard poodle and a Persian kitten would be nice for the Trump family.
ST says
I think Trump’s should get an Austrlian Labradoodle. I love my Max.
Lee says
I think it would be great if he broke all the rules and got a Flemmish Giant rabbit.
theglutenfreejourneyblog says
Based on his history, I am willing to bet it will be a rescue, from a shelter.
William says
A pit bull will be perfect for the White House. A dog that is as misunderstood as was Trump through his campaign.
Tara says
A pit bull. They are way smarter and loving and loyal than most breeds. Yes, I am a pit bull mother and lover.
M.Dowd says
Well I think a Labradoodle would be the best choice. The Labradoodle is mixture of a poodle and a Lab,both of those dogs are very intelligent,Trump needs all of the brain matter he can get.
Margaret Poole says
I think that should be up to the family, if one at all. Just like any other American family. I would not want any one telling me I have to have a pet just because someone else did. And if They did get one maybe name it deplorable.
Claudia says
He won’t get a pet because he reportedly DOES NOT LIKE ANIMALS. He was heard saying they were dirty and “nasty” and that “only women like them.” I think it’s because he travels so much or something but he apparently does NOT like them at all.
Liza Argay says
My father once told me to never trust anyone who doesn’t like dogs.
Allison Bland says
Definitely something of the miniature variety, to better fit in his tiny hands.
ghawtho1 says
Looks more and more like it will be a Russian wolfhound, also called the Borzoi.
Tara Milner says
He’s chosen a poodle- golden retriever mix and named him Patton. You must update.
Presidential Pet Museum says
Hi Tara, we did put an update at the end of the article earlier this month. You can also read about that news here: https://presidentialpetmuseum.com/blog/donald-trump-goldendoodle-patton/
Please note that, from our understanding, President-elect Trump has not yet “chosen” the dog. Rather, someone has offered the puppy as a gift, so we’ll have to wait and see if this cute puppy comes along to the White House in mid-January.
Jane says
I don’t think any dog would have him. They are impeccable judges of character, you know, and any one of them probably snarls if he gets within ten feet.
maria says
Oh shush.
Michelle says
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/video/2015/dec/10/donald-trump-attacked-by-american-bald-eagle-video Even our national symbol can’t stand him.
Daniel Wright says
Actually, I challenge your assertion about presidential pets. Why do you limit your discussion to just dogs according to my calculation, President Polk was the only president without any pets of any variety
Presidential Pet Museum says
We just think it’s interesting that in the modern era — the past 100 years and running — every president has had a dog at some point.
Daniel Wright says
looking at Wikipedia, I know not a definitive source, but Teddy Roosevelt had a zoo! Including many dogs
Jennifer says
He should get a shelter dog but I’m sure he will get a purebred
Maureen says
The Trumps should not be allowed to have pets of any kind. IF a dog is gotten he/she should be adopted from a shelter. Period. Adopt Don’t Shop.
Abster says
A cat would be best for him It’s not a lot of extra trouble and will keep out of his way. He doesn’t seem like the type to want a dog slobbering all over.
Maria Elko says
A boxer would be a wonderful dog for President-elect Trump and his family.
Anna says
President-elect Trump and his family will be great owners to any dog. Our family pet is a mixed breed who is the best. Maybe that could be an option for them. The White House will finally be GREAT again with the Trumps’ and a new dog in it!
emily says
he should get a lab
emily says
ya
Valerie says
How about a cat – a Russian Blue perhaps?.
Julie Galston Harris says
Get a fish.
Sue says
PLEASE go to the shelter and get a rescue dog!!! His influence would save so many!!!
Zoe says
German Shepherd, best dog in the world.
dave says
he should get Staffordshire bull terrier x breed from a rescue centre. they make great family pets and love children. they are very loyal and love lots if fuss and affection
Lovesbogswissdogs says
A Boxer, a pit bull, or Grater Swiss Mountain Dog wou K d be my initial SUGGESTIONS…whichever dog that Baron wants. I believe all should back off and support Baron…he has a difficult fishbowl ahead AND. shame on you who deride a10 year oldchild.
Tanya Elder says
wow, his dad should take him to the animal shelter to pick out two dogs who speak to him from the heart, take them home and give them a new life filled with love of a young boy. It would be a great heartwarming story for the hallmark channel.
Leinne says
Donald and Melania seem too cold to be pet people. Donald is old as hell and if he’s gone this long without any pets then I doubt he’d want one now. It’ll come off as fake, and you can tell if someone is faking affection. Pets can detect it too.
Dean White says
Donald Trump clearly doesn’t believe in climate change, and he shows little regard for the environment, so I can’t see him being a lover of animals. In fact I think dogs would hate him.
Des says
He should get a wolfdog puppy ( alaskan malamute hybrid ). The kind that looks like a wolf ,but is actually a dog. It is an unusual dog , looks impressive & it is a pure American dog.
Betty Hilliard says
He does not need a pet of any kind…if he did get one, he would probably employ a pet sitter to take care of it…
JC says
I could see the First Lady with an Afghan or two. Although, I feel sorry for any pet they get.
Tanya Elder says
I think he should go to the shelter and pick a dog who speaks to him from the heart. It will be a rescue with a happy ending, and it will involve two dogs who are in need of a new better life. Even if he pays someone to take care of them, they will still have a much better life than in a cage waiting to get adopted or their death if they are in a high kill shelter.
Steven says
To my knowledge, Trump has never owned a dog (or ANY other kind of pet animal) in his entire life, not even as a kid. He only poses with the winning dog at the annual Westminster Kennel Club show, just for publicity and to be seen with a winner. I have also noticed that whenever he mentions dogs, it is through his Twitter feed that sometimes refers to people in a negative light (examples: “Fired like a dog”, “Begging like a dog” or “Choking like a dog”, etc.). The Human Society was called Trump as “a threat to animals everywhere” because of his environmental policies he wants to pursue, while noting that his two oldest sons are big-game trophy hunters (one of them was shown holding a severed elephant’s tail), and that his wife wears mink fur coats. I’d say Trump is the most “anti-animal” U.S. President in our lifetime. I’m glad Trump doesn’t currently have a dog right now. I would feel sorry for any dog who might get adopted by him.
whelpleytechblog says
He needs something majestic, that commands respect, that makes our enemies fear us. Like an eagle, crossed with a lion, crossed with a machinegun. We’re going to get all out best people, the very best scientists we’ve forbidden from looking at the weather, we’re gonna make this the greatest pet ever.
(j/k, 45 has no love for any living creature)
Rich Williams says
I strongly suspect that Trump doesn’t like animals because THEY don’t like HIM. You can’t fool animals.
Kimberly says
It seems like he will be the first president since Roosevelt, who doesn’t have a dog. He likes being original…
michael says
Weimaraner low maintenance touted as having the brain of a human
Andrew says
That is certainly an intriguing choice! We’ll have to see if the president decides to eventually get a pet or not. Hopefully so!
