Like most dogs, Bruce is very good at sniffing. It doesn’t take him long at all to pick up the trail of Peter Rabbit. It leads the duo out of the White House proper, and into the expanse of fenced off property at the back of the facility.
There, in a cluster of clover, blooming pretty white, is none other than Peter Rabbit himself. The little thing’s head snaps up at the sound of them, and it must make a funny sight indeed – a bull terrier and a turkey, from another time and another place.
Surprised, Peter Rabbit asks, “what are you doing here?”
“I was going to ask you that,” says Jack. “I hear people are looking for you!”
Bruce wags his tail so hard that he almost falls over. “We did it! We found you! Oh, that’s so good! That means we can figure out what we’re supposed to do! Oh, unless finding you was our job? I don’t think that’s it, though. This was too easy!”
“Finding me?” Peter Rabbit laughs. “I’m not missing!”
Jack explains, “the people think you are.” He tilts his head to the side. “What are you doing?”
“One of the aids, they lost a ring. He said it was very important, that it used to be his grandmother’s and he’s going to use it to propose to his girlfriend,” explains Peter Rabbit. “I thought that I would try to find it for him.”
Jack clucks a few times. “Very noble! But I don’t think that the room would send us here for that.”
Peter Rabbit asks, “didn’t the Room tell you?”
Bruce stops wagging his tail. His ears flick back and he drops his head, clearly embarrassed. “It did, but I don’t remember. I know, that sounds silly but…”
Peter Rabbit, smart and quick, says, “no! I forget things all the time! Why don’t you help me find the ring, and then we can work together to figure out why you’re there!”
Now, turkey’s have many talents.
One talent that very few people know about is their ability to find anything that’s shiny. So it’s really no surprise that Jack makes short work of finding the ring, glinting gold in the late evening sun light. With a pleased gobble, Jack alerts his companions, snatches the ring up in his beak, and flaps his wings in success.
Bruce barks gleefully. “You did it! That’s great! I knew it was going to be great having you as a partner!”
Jack can’t help the way his feathers fluff up at the praise.
Peter Rabbit thumps a hind foot happily. “Alright! Let’s deliver the ring, and figure out what’s going on with the two of you!”
