I’m thrilled to hear that President and Mrs. Bush will be honoring the “First Pets Throughout the Years” this Christmas. What a clever, special idea!
Excellent work on this website.

Pets are known to relieve undue stress, and provide a welcome means of distraction. I love animals of all sorts and I’m happy to see that the presidential pets are being immortalized for their decades of unconditional love.

I love this site. Its great to see the great men of our Country have loved their animals as so many Americans do! Now I am really surprised when I think of all the laws restricting pets in number or size.
Sally King says
Thank you for a wonderful site dedicated to pets. I have two cats and one dog. The dog is a pug that has been a lot of company to me,as I’ve not long ago lost my husband and Duke lost a very loved master. But we are both healing together. In my husbands last days he said, “TAKE CARE OF MY PUPPY” which he knew I would do.
Bernadette Hoegerle says
What a touching site! Just heartwarming to see these wonderful pets remembered in such a way and makes me think on all of my little ones who have passed on and who I loved so dearly.
William Smith says
It’s about time! With all the presidential libraries, it is good to see your web site and museum for their pets. Every president is in the position of being alone at the top, what better than to have a companion who is loyal and can keep a secret.
Lesley Nagle and Kruzr says
I believe this site is just a start! Go and check out the museum. Keep up the fantastic work.
lynda straub says
I think this is a great web page. I encourage my students to visit it often. It’s a great way to get kids to learn about the presidents. They become so interested they forget it’s called “learning” instead of “fun.”
Thank you for having it available to everyone.
Sheila Willis says
My son and I were interested in how India, the cat, got her name. We watch Ruben Sierra play baseball and think it is nice that the cat was named after him.
John Lukach says
I love every one of these pets.
David R. Herron, Ph.D. says
Came across your web page after reading the article in the Sunday Washington Times. Nice to know you exist!
I had the pleasure of meeting Millie back when George Bush was still VP. I was in a receiving line for a picnic at the VP’s mansion. Millie was there along with George & Barbara, and instead of shaking Barbara’s hand, I stooped to pet Millie!!!

This is a great idea. Pets are so important in our lives; great stress relievers. This web site gives homage to some of the more famous pets but we all have them and they are just like these. Thank you!

Susan Tonry says
A wonderful and enjoyable website. “The First Pets” have always been endeared to the public. As a lover of Scotties, it is interesting that these delightful pooches have been the companions and comfort of two presidents who have had to endure the troubles of war time.
Carson Hubred says
I had no idea the Presidents had such neat pets. I’ve learned a lot from this website. Thanks.
Wonder if we could get Tony Blair to own an Exotic Pet? Good on Theodore Roosevelt – looks like he had some great pets!
hey i love this site. Its really cool how you can find presidents and see what kind of pets they had. it was nice using this site for info on Andrew Jackson.

I have to organize a President’s Day presentation to a group of children for Feb and just want to thank you for this website, its an eye-opening learning the different animals/birds/ reptiles that graced the White House and its first families!!
The pets are so cool. I am abigail adams and i just found that my dogs were Juno and Satan and my husband built the first stables at the white house. His favorite horse was Cleopatra.
It was so interesting to read and see the pictures of the pets that have been a part of the white house through the years! I was searching for a site like this and finally found it 🙂
Great website. It was interesting to see the shifts and trends in presidential pets through the years. Thanks.
Marianna from Italy says
Very nice website. As your 34th American president I have a weimaraner named Eisenhower. He’s the most powerful, elegant and beautiful dog ever. Perfect for the White House.
Very nice web-site. Wish I would have looked for it sooner; I enjoyed it very much! Only in America! Love them pets!
I just Googled presidential pets not thinking there would be a museum. This is pretty cool!
i just wanted to find out if GEORGE WASHINGTON HAD DOGS BUT I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT ALL THE COOL PRESDENT’S DOGS SO I WENT HERE INSTEAD
I saw this website in Dog Fancy and I like it. Can’t wait to hear what dog Obama and his family are getting.
The Albinson Family says
I think President elect Obama should consider getting a Scottish Terrier, they look so classy in the White House:)
I hope the Obamas pick a dog that bites them!
I think that the Obamas need a Poodle. I have a Shetland Sheepdog and boy does he bark a-lot.
Tere Michaels says
I think they should pick the dog that best fits their family; I don’t think anyone has a right to tell someone what breed of companion animal they should have! Freedom of Choice!
David Dillow Thomas says
I think the new White House pet should been a Dodson dog. Thay make a very nice dog. For small children and his wife and he could take it with him on the airplanes. From the Thomas family in Portland, Indiana.
Derek Bassham says
I also loved this site, finding out what kind of pets our Presidents and famlies had during their stay in the White House. I would have never guessed on some of the animals just by looking at our past Presidents’ faces.
I love this website; it is very interesting. I love looking at dogs. I think the Obama’s choice of dog is so cute! I wonder if they will get more dogs or any other pet?
Molly R. says
I think Obama should get a ferret. They are cute and friendly and small.
If President Obama and family want to get a shelter dog, then they should pick a mutt, which is what most shelters have the most of.
The Prez family should get a white poodle! during family gatherings he can be the big white elephant in the room; hahaha I made a political joke!
I would get a boxer they are great dogs and are very sweet and most of them are smart we got ours from the pound and she had 7 puppies and we found out the day before she had them that she was pregnant because she was so skinny one pup we kept was light brown and has a white collar and 4 white socks she is my daughter Rachel’s pup her name is Lucy.
lindsey brewer says
What is up with all of crazy animals. They most really like dogs. Like John Q Adams had an alligator and silkworms.
This site is great, the pets get just about as much media attention as the Presidential Family (most times) and I can’t wait to see my info added!
i love the presidential dogs lol

I lovvvve this website! The museum should be in DC though.
I really appreciate what you’re doing here. Great website.
Site looks terrific, nice job and very interesting and engaging. Good Luck
John Rovenolt says
You have created a truly niche archival wonder of history! We all know that no matter their political affiliation, the job of being President is stressful and overwhelming just like the citizens that person governs. Thank God for the pets we have to take us away from those stresses of daily life and give us that unconditional love that only animals could give us. This site sure emulates the wholesome spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, the Catholic patron saint of animals! 🙂
Presidential Pet Museum says
Hi John, thank you very much for your kind words. Yes, pets are a true gift — and stress savers!
Meredith Berry says
I am a gifted and talented teacher in Memphis, TN. I am currently writing a mini-study on Presidential Pets. This website is a life saver.

If someone sold stuffed toys of presidential pets, I would try to get the whole collection. Thanks for the website, love all animals friends.

We used to have a few such toys, and we’re sold out. But we hope to start a new collection again soon. Thanks for the reminder; it’s a really good idea.
Anna Wilkinson says
I wanted to visit your museum but cannot find the hours or location on your website. Are you open to the public?
Presidential Pet Museum says
Hi Anna, right now the physical museum is closed for renovations. Look for it to reopen later at the Dude Ranch, Glen Allen, VA.
WOW everything exists. I love this museum.

His brave Rough Rider mount Little Texas

I loved this website. We were so hoping to find a Boston Rescue. There was one listed but was not able to register. We had a Boston pass-away a month ago and truly want another.
Kathy Tsai says
I just came across this fascinating website. Since it is not likely that I’ll get to the D.C. area in the near or far future, I’m glad this website is available. Hippos, alligators, sheep, raccoons, mice, various wild birds, and the usual dogs, cats, horses, ponies, and the first pardoned turkey–an amazing collection.
Presidential Pet Museum says
Hi Kathy, thank you so much! Glad to have entertained you. The physical museum location is actually closed right now; we are hoping for funding to get it going again.
I’m a long time lover of presidential history and animals alike. So it’s relly great that i was able to come by your site and learn about two things i love at the same time. Maybe it’s just me, but while i enjoyed reading up on all the presidential pets, i can’t help but be a little sad knowing that other then Obama’s two dogs all of these adorable animals are now gone.
Presidential Pet Museum says
Michael, thank you for your comment. We couldn’t agree more.
wow i didnt even know there is so much presidential pet history. hopefully Trump will add valuable history to this as well
LOVE THIS WEBSITE!!! What a unique, adorable online exhihit. Its such a shame that the brick and mortar museum had to close its doors…. Start a Kickstarter for it and raise money from other fans! It DESERVES to exist again!!!!!!!
Thanks so much for the wonderful history! Agree on kickstarter!
